Overview

Playing an average of 150+ shows per year around the world, John Allaire is easily one of Canada’s top independent road warriors. In fact, he recently celebrated his 3,000th career show with a series of sold out concerts in 2024. John has won many awards, including the Americana Songwriters’ Association award in Nashville for best lyricist and the Toronto Independent Music Award for “best live show”. Penguin Eggs magazine has called John “the next Canadian music legend” and “a new Neil Young”.  His storytelling and quick wit make him a perennial festival favourite and a stalwart club-land institution.

John is best known around the Nation’s Capital as the host of “The Allaire Show”, a weekly singer-songwriter series at Quinn’s Ale House in Old Ottawa South and Brews and Blues in Stittsville, featuring guests from around the world. He, along with his backing band, The Campistas, were asked to be one of the opening acts for Neil Young and Crazy Horse on their 2024 Love Earth Tour.

John was a founding member of the ‘80s and ‘90s alt-rock band, The Town Cryers, and has shared the stage with hundreds of other popular acts, including The Black Crowes, Steve Earle, Snoop Dogg, Wilco, Three Days Grace, City and Colour, Blue Rodeo, Alejandro Escovedo, David Lindley, Donovan, HooDoo Gurus, BoDeans, Alanis Morrisette, Drive-By Truckers and many more.

He has, in recent times, become known as the “poet laureate” of the NHL Network. Basically, he writes songs and parodies for the sports network and appears live at their headquarters in Toronto or on site for special events.

John is versatile in presentation and can perform as a solo act, duet or with his 4-piece band, “John Allaire & the Campistas”.

Early Career & Bands

John Allaire began his professional music journey in 1984 and quickly immersed himself in the Canadian music scene. He was a founding member of the alt‑rock band The Town Cryers, whose 1987 debut album “All’s Well” hit number one on seven Canadian radio stations. Their 1989 CD, Surprise Surprise, included the music video for “Never Bin Hurt B‑4”, which won top independent video in Canada that year.

The band disbanded in 1992 after releasing another 18‑track album titled Stanley’s Cup.
In 1995, Allaire founded the alt/punk group The Mercy Miners, who released Knuckle Sandwich in 1997 and toured with notable acts like Econoline Crush and Nada Surf

Solo Career & Recognition

Transitioning to a solo career in 2003, Allaire released Crime and Punishment, a 12‑song album that gained traction on Canada’s East Coast and across the United States.

His 2005 follow‑up album, Thank You Waitress!, became a fan favorite, especially the title track.

The 2007 release Ghosts of the Royal Motel earned high praise, with reviewers dubbing him “Canada’s next music legend” and “a new Neil Young”, while the single “Bourbon” received international video play.

In 2009, his album Up Hill … Both Ways earned him the American Songwriters’ Association award for Best Lyrics for the song “Magnets,” and he also won the Toronto Independent Music Award for Best Live Act. He has put out five more full-length albums since then.

Community & The Allaires

Since around 2010, Allaire has hosted “The Allaire Show”, a weekly singer-songwriter showcase at Quinn’s Ale House in Ottawa’s Old South. It features local and international guest artists and has become a beloved fixture in the capital’s live music scene. In 2025, it expanded to two weekly shows, including one in the Village of Stittsville on Thursday evenings.

John Allaire and his wife Lisa recently were presented with The United Way Community Builder Award in recognition of the thousands of dollars they have raised for charities in the region over the years.
